Where RGB Reigns Supreme
Our journey begins with the world you’re most familiar with – the digital world. Every image you capture on your camera or scanner or see displayed on your computer screen utilizes the RGB color model. This stands for Red, Green, and Blue, the three primary colors of light that combine to create a vast spectrum of digital hues.
Imagine millions of tiny red, green, and blue pixels working in concert – the more these colors are combined and varied in intensity, the richer and more vibrant the image becomes. This is why RGB excels in displaying a large finite range of colors on electronic devices.
RGB is an additive color model which starts with black (no color or R=0 G=0 B=0) and adds Red, Green and/or Blue light to create colors you see.
The Printing Press: Where CMYK Takes Center Stage
However, the world of physical printing operates with a different set of rules. While RGB utilizes light to create color, the printing process relies on pigments or inks. This is where CMYK, which stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (also known as K) enters the scene.
CMYK is a subtractive color model, meaning it starts with white and subtracts colors to create different shades. Here’s how it works:
Cyan: This ink absorbs red light, reflecting cyan.
Magenta: This ink absorbs green light, reflecting magenta.
Yellow: This ink absorbs blue light, reflecting yellow.
Black: Pure black ink is often difficult to produce in printing. A combination of CMY inks can only create a dark brown – not a pure black color hence the need for black ink.
By carefully combining these four inks in various proportions, printers can produce a wide range of colors on physical materials like paper or film labels.
This means that somewhere in the print production cycle all RGB elements and images need to be converted to good CMYK values. In flexo, this can mean, holding a minimum dot in the highlights and considering dot gain that will happen on press while printing.
The Color Chameleon: Enter Lab
The transition from the RGB world of your digital designs to the CMYK world of printing isn’t always a straightforward one. Here’s where the magic of Lab comes in. Lab is a device-independent color space that acts as a universal translator between RGB and CMYK.
Imagine Lab as a giant color library that understands the languages of both digital and print. When an image needs to be converted from RGB to CMYK for printing, it first passes through Lab. Lab analyzes the RGB colors and ensures they are translated accurately into the CMYK printing language, taking into account the limitations of the CMYK ink spectrum.
This intermediary step is crucial for maintaining color accuracy and vibrancy in the final printed labels. Without Lab, there’s a risk of colors appearing dull or mismatched on the final product.
The Lab color space is a theoretical color space that includes all possible colors. This is why this space is used for all color measurements as explained in previous blogs. RGB is a subset of Lab – it contains lesser colors then the maximum possible range within the Lab color space. And then CMYK is a subset of RGB color space and it contains even further lesser colors than the RGB space. Lab is 100% of all possible colors visible to the eye, RGB is roughly half the colors of Lab and CMYK is roughly half of RGB. None of the CMYK color space can exist beyond the RGB capability of the image capturing device.
Note: If artwork is supplied as CMYK or CMYK plus spots only, then no conversion using RGB or Lab values is required since we are already in the printing space.
The RGB to CMYK Transformation: A Behind-the-Scenes Orchestration
So, how does this color conversion happen at Kwality Labels? Here’s a glimpse into the process:
1. Design Submission: The creative process starts with your exceptional label design submitted via digital file which may include some elements in the RGB format.
2. Color Profile Check: We meticulously examine the color profiles that exist on RGB elements in your artwork. This embedded data tells us how the colors were created in your design software and ensures we have a clear starting point for the conversion process.
3. RGB to Lab Conversion: The color management software utilizes advanced algorithms to translate the RGB colors in your design into the Lab color space. Here, the colors are analyzed and represented in a way that is independent of the specific device used to create the artwork.
4. Lab to CMYK Conversion: Leveraging the Lab data as a bridge, the software then converts the colors from Lab into their closest CMYK equivalents. This takes into account the limitations of the CMYK ink gamut to ensure the best possible color match. Steps 3 and 4 here often happen seamlessly or automatically in the background without an operator’s direct involvement. It should be noted that taking an RGB image to CMYK which is the smallest of the three color spaces will result in some loss of color quality. Taking an image back to RGB or Lab from CMYK does not recover any of this loss. So be careful when converting from RGB to CMYK, it should only be done one time to retain maximum quality possible because it is not possible to go from a smaller color space to the larger space and regain lost color values.

6. Printing Press: The CMYK color information is sent to the printing press. Here, the precise combination of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks are applied to the label material, bringing the design to life in stunning, vibrant color to meet your desired expectation.
7. Another way to consider this is that all images start somewhere as RGB, get passed temporarily through Lab space for conversion to a final CMYK printing image. So any image can be considered to exist as 10 channels – just not all 10 at one time – 3 channels for RGB, 3 for Lab and 4 for CMYK. Any color correction or image adjustments can be made in any of these 10 channels but only within a particular color space done one at a time to achieve a good CMYK image for print.
